Secrest Arboretum Hiking Trails Pictures![]() Secrest Arboretum has the beauty of over 2,000 trees and shrubs that will greet visitors to The Ohio State University’s Secrest Arboretum. Through its various education and outreach programs in 2004, visitors will discover landscape solutions and the value of research-based information for an enhanced landscape. Its program and outreach initiatives share scientific knowledge of plants and landscape ideas.
Researchers, educators, students, consumers, and representatives of green trade industries; nurseries, garden centers, and landscape construction, maintenance, and architectural firms; all benefit from research based information through discovery, education, beauty, wellness and economic health. Research provides insight into the science and technology of growing plants and the organization of such into an effective, productive landscape.
Secrest Arboretum has evolved as an outdoor research laboratory and educational display garden, since Edmund Secrest set out the first planting in 1909 for a proposed Forest Arboretum. Many plants have found their way from Secrest research studies into the green trade, including the Red Sunset® Maple, a very popular tree boasting early fall color in brilliant shades of red and orange. The evaluation of deciduous tree selections in the Secrest Shade Tree Evaluation Project has been the driving force for market development of trees to replace the dying American elms that defaced Midwestern and eastern landscapes in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, the market demand for crabapples has been revitalized through Secrest Arboretum research that identifies disease-resistant cultivars –creating a higher-value product for consumers while decreasing production expenses for growers.
Today, Secrest Arboretum has multipurpose functions of interdisciplinary research, educational outreach, and display of natural and landscape beauty –and free public access remains first and foremost in its mission and vision. Secrest Arboretum is an outdoor research laboratory and display garden generating knowledge to advance and communicate the understanding, use, and enjoyment of plants for people of the Great Lakes Region.
The vision of Secrest expands in response to the rising needs and trends of gardening. We see the need to provide visitors with a readily available access into and circulation through the arboretum, expansion of research areas, and the addition of beautifully and functionally designed themed landscapes. We envision new programming that will strengthen the relationship of people and plants and generate and communicate research-based knowledge about the culture, maintenance, and use of landscape plants.
