Penitentiary Glen Reservation and Nature Center is located right next to another great park Holden Arboretum where you'll see many species of plants and trees that have been nurtured for years. You can watch the animals at the Wildlife Center or in the Butterfly Gardens. Hike the scenic trails to the marsh, the gorge overlook, or miniature steam powered trains. When you go to the the wildlife center you'll see birds that you might not typically see. Injured birds take refuge there. They are rehibilitated until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Those birds whose injuries do not allow them to be released are called permenant residents as they spend their remaining days living at the Pennitiary glen nature center in lake county.

You can adopt an injured animal and even get your name on the yard board. For 75 dollars or more you can have the animal visit the group of your choice. They have a wildlife Hotline 440-256-2131 just in case you might want to report an injured animal that you see. Located there are red tailed hawks, red shouldered hawk, broad winged hawk, great horned owl, barred owls, barn owl, turkey vulture, and great blue heron.

You can start your hike on the one half mile Glen meadow loop which is also a small steam engine route that can be taken for a ride. From there you can hike North to the one mile Gorge loop. As you approach the North section of the loop you'll see steps down to the Stoney Brook Falls. Once your down into the Gorge you'll see one of Ohio's best gorges full of plant and animal life. Back up the steps and South around the Gorge Rim loop you'll hit the rabbit run loop which runs West across the nature center in the Glen meadow loop where you'll find the Gorge overlook. From there you can take the one mile Bobolink loop around beautiful meadows and ponds where you'll see hundreds of Bobolinks flying there.

Directions: Take I-90 to Rt. 306 south for about one mile to Kirtland-Chardon Road and turn left (east) for 2 miles to Penitentiary Glen Reservation located on the right (south) side of the road.
