Newfound Gap Road Vista Tour Pictures MovieNewfound Gap Road is as scenic a road as it gets. I headed South from Gatlinburg towards the great hikes of Clingmans Dome and Chimney Tops. Enroute to Newfound Gap I filmed all of the incredible Vistas in picture and movie form. These vistas were seemely endless. Around each corner you could expect a completely new and unique vista. Chimney Tops Trail is just 10 miles South of Gatlinburg on the Newfound Gap Road. The climb at Chimney Tops is 1,700' at 4 miles roundtrip. There are old forest growth hardwood trees near the bottom and spruce and firs on top. Sixteen miles from Gatlinburg I found the Newfound Gap. This scenic stop off is the lowest area the road passes over the Smoky Mountains within the park. Here the state lines are drawn from West to East. Newfound Gap stands at an elevation of 5048' and captures the essence of the Smokies. A mixture of northern hardwoods and spruce-fire forests dominate the wonderfull mountain views.
From Newfound Gap you could either continue South on Newfound Gap Road out of the park or drive the 7 mile Clingmans Dome Southwest following the state line. Clingmans Dome is the highest peak in the Smokies at 6,643'. On a clear day the observation tower on the summit of the mountain offer a spectacular 360 degree view of the Smokies and beyond. Mingo Falls Trail is located just South of the park, off the Newfound Gap Road, within the Cherokee Indian Reservation. It's only .4 mile up a paved trail. |
