Hampton Hills Cuyahoga Metropark Hiking Trail Pictures
Hampton Hills Cuyahoga Metropark permits hikers to start out on either of the park's
two trails. It comes to cross a bridge that once was a part of East
River Road before it was moved to its present route in the late 1920s and renamed Akron-Peninsula Road. At the
Top o' the World area visitors can see a Western Reserve farm house, circa 1820-1850, which for many years served
as a summer home for Rhea H. and E. Reginald Adam. They donated it and 162 acres of ravines and hilltop farm land
to the Metro Parks in 1967. Earlier, in 1964, the City of Akron leased 116 acres of wooded ravines to the Metro
Parks to start Hampton Hills Metro Park in exchange for land at Goodyear Heights Metro Park where the city erected
a water tower.
Trails: Symbol Trail Name Length Description: Adam Run 3.2 miles Steep; Hike The 3.2-mile Adam Run and 1.6-mile Spring Hollow trails, two of Metro Parks’ most demanding, form a sort of figure eight through the ravines and over streams. The quiet ravines of Hampton Hills Cuyahoga Metropark were formed as Adam Run and its tributaries cut down through the valley wall of ancient lake sediment and glacial till during the 10,000-12,000 years since the last glacier left northeastern Ohio. In the ravines grow Black Walnut, Slippery Elm and Sycamore trees with oaks covering the dry ridge tops. Large colonies of scouring rushes line the banks of the clear stream. Deer tracks and bird nests often are spotted by hikers. A visit to the old farm fields atop the ridges shows summertime wildflowers like Field Milkwort or a brilliant autumn display of Goldenrod and asters.
Unique Features: Scenic vista of Cuyahoga Valley at Top O' The World. Natural Scene: At the Top O’ the World Area, open fields contain milkwort, ironweed, Queen Anne’s lace, goldenrods and asters. Bluebird boxes, which are monitored by volunteers, can be seen rising above the meadow grasses. Each summer, bluebirds sit perched atop the nest boxes, watching for their insect prey. Other notable bird species at Hampton Hills include woodcocks, wild turkeys and large birds of prey like red-tailed hawks, which can be seen soaring above the meadows as they hunt for small voles and mice.
