Air Show 2006 MAPS Aero Expo Akron Fulton Airport Pictures Streaming MovieAir Show 2006 at the Akron fulton airport in Ohio had spectacular displays of aerobatics, wing walking, the B 2 Stealth Bomber, the B-17 Bomber, world war two fighters, the MiG 17 jet, the F-86 Sabre jet and many other beautiful vintage airplanes. Welcome to the 2006 Aero Expo Air Show at the Akron Fulton Airport. I am honored to have had the opportunity to participate in the annual two day display of historic military aircraft.
Besides being a leader in aviation technology, avaition development, and aerospace research, Ohio is the birthplace of famous aviators and astronauts.
The 2006 Air Show Expo is hosted by the the Military Aviation Preservation Society (or MAPS). The museum is located at the Akron/Canton airport and is open daily (except Sundays) for tours.
In 1989, a core group of the Confederate Air Force branch sought to bring an airworthy historic aircraft to the Akron/Canton area. This group founded MAPS, in 1990.
The museum received their first aircraft, three SBD Dauntless dive-bombers in 1990. Some of the aircraft currently residing at the Museum include an F-4S Phantom and its rival: a MiG-17 Fresco; an A7-E Corsair II; an F-llF tiger; a B-26 Marauder, an S-2F Tracker, an L-2 Grasshopper, and a SBD Dauntless.
MAPS recently received a number of jets waiting to be restored for display. They are also working to renovate the donated hangar, to hold planes and other Museum displays such as the piece of the USS Arizona. They also continue to work on Project Scrapbook: videotaping and preserving the stories of our veterans.
While they do all this, they also maintain their currently fltyable aircraft, and are pursuing requirements to get them to other air shows. At age 19 I received my private pilot license from World War two fighter pilot Dick Schwab who worked out of Kent State University for many years. He knew many other WW II pilots including his friend Paul W. Tibbets who flew the Enola Gay that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan.
World War Two pilot Paul W. Tibbets was at the 2002 Akron Air Show. I was fortunate enough to get his autograph on his newly released book "Return Of The Enola Gay." I found it unbelievable that I was in the presence of the the man who flew the plane that had an immediate effect on stopping the war. Many times I saw this man on the history channel and in history books.
In 2002 the Akron Air Show also had a special tribute honoring Doolittle's Tokyo Raiders. Doolittle's raiders were the first WW II pilots to bomb Japan on a daring raid from aircraft carriers. I talked with Major Robert K Morgan, Pilot, "B-29 DAUNTLESS DOTTY"-who led the 1st B-29 Raid on Tokyo on the 24th of November 1944. Major Morgan autographed a picture for me that shows him with the B-29 Bomber in 1944. I also found it hard to believe that I was in the presence of the historic Doolittle Tokyo Raiders gang.
When I taught flying in Houston Texas, I received my certified flight instructor advanced "instrument" rating by another world war pilot who flew torpedo bombers. He would often tell me his World War two experiences in the battle of Midway. "Tracers were all around me as I approached the Japanese fleet." He also said "The air space is becoming too restictive. We used to be able to fly freely most everywhere." Visit website hikingohioparks.com for more detailed information about many hiking Ohio park trails and movies. |
